Handcart Company - Pioneer Art

Willie and Martin Handcart Saga and Rescue 1856

As the fair weather beguiled the pioneer saints in the Willie and Martin handcart companies to head off late in the season, their first stretch of travel was met with progress and anxious enthusiasm. John Chislett, captain, wrote that his heart was gladdened to see the “merry countenances and buoyant steps” of the saints as they continued towards Zion. He recorded, “The strains of the handcart song rang in my ears like sweet music. I saw them off in good earnest to the tune of Some Must Push, and Some Must Pull.”
