This is the preliminary drawing for a commissioned oil painting I did for a Christian friend of mine named Joshua. He was part of a medical mission serving in Africa. Grand African Lady is one of the natives that received medical aid.
I could not let go of this drawing; it remains as part of my private collection. You can see life swimming in her eyes. She is very beautiful to me. Her wrinkles, drooping skin, and eyelids reveal all her life experiences. I liken her to a great oak tree, marked with much wear yet possessing in her soul enduring strength because of all the hardships, tragedies, and good times in her life. Age deserves great respect and honor. Perhaps I too, might someday have the privilege to visit this place.
