The Story
Why does the Lord want us to remember Lot’s wife? (Luke 17:32)
It is a profound story for our time.
This apocalyptic landscape is inspired by the Old and New Testament, but the idea came to me after seeing a box of Morton salt sitting on our kitchen table. The landscape imagery is referenced from an old black and white photo of the general sight where the event of Lot’s wife took place.
Christ warns us to leave worldly things and beliefs out of our hearts. He desires to save each of us, but to do that we must let go of those things that will destroy us in any way, that would leave us without root or branch. This is the symbolism of Lot’s wife turning back to look, to worship Sodom again. She lost what should have been most dear to her: her husband, her children, and her own life.
Genesis 19:24-29
24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26 ¶ But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. (When it Rains it pours)
27 ¶ And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord:
28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
29 ¶ And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
